土地の記憶を辿って/Discovering the Sense Of Place

 

展示会場であるこの一軒家は十数年ほど空き家となっていました。初めてこの家を訪れた時、いわゆる「展示会場」とは異質の雰囲気を感じました。剥がれかけた壁の塗装や、ところどころ破れた障子など、劣化した内装が印象に残り、昭和を感じさせる間取りと設えは、建設された時期から時が止まっているかのようでした。私達はこの家を、建築の時代背景とかつての住人の日常生活の名残を表わす一つの造形物として捉え、改築せずありのままの姿を極力残し、荒れ果てた内装を修復し装飾を施して再生させることにしました。

作品制作を進めていく中で、この家が立地する地域を理解するために、歴史や自然環境について調べたところ、平凡で小さな一軒家の印象とはかけ離れた知られざる史実や貴重な自然の存在を知りました。第一に、遥か昔に家の庭の目の前に海が広がっていたことです。縄文海進と言われる海面上昇により、縄文時代には現在内陸であるさいたままで海が入り込んでいました。その証拠に貝塚も多く存在します。現在ではさいたまは海岸に面していないため、この事実は広くは知られていません。そうした過去の海の存在を解き明かす試みも含め、1階にはさいたまの海に関わる作品を展開しています。

第二にその水域の変遷により、さいたま市には見沼田んぼが存在するということ。見沼田んぼは、荒川・利根川水系の水害を回避する貯水池の役割を担う、さいたまに残された重要な自然保護地区です。多様な生物が棲みつき、都心との距離30㎞圏内に位置する希少な大規模緑地が現存しています。しかしながら都市開発が進み、これまで以上に環境保全が大きな課題となっています。見沼田んぼには絶滅危惧種も多く生息しているため、自然環境が崩されれば、消滅してしまう可能性があります。このようなリサーチを通して、2階には見沼田んぼに関係する作品を展示することにしました。

そうした調査を元に作品を制作したことから、集めた資料や参考となる本や、また通常公開することのない制作過程で使用した材料や道具を、一階の洋室に配置し、自由に閲覧できる資料室にしました。この家に残されていたものを作品の材料として扱うには、素材の強度など研究し、独自の手法を試行錯誤しなければなりませんでした。この家に流れた時を振り返りながら行ったその工程は、発掘作業や古美術の修復のようでした。この家の再生に取り組んだ道のりすべてが作品の一部であると考え、資料室の一室にまとめました。

展示に訪れる人々が小さな一軒家の日常空間に佇み、時空を超えたさいたまの雄大な自然環境の移り変わりに想いを馳せ、未来の姿を想い描けるような空間作りを目指しました。訪問者が時を過ごすことで仮想の住人となり、静まり返った無人の空き家に新たな歴史が刻まれ完成するアートプロジェクトです。

 

 

The house used for this exhibition has been vacant for about ten years. When we visited here for the first time, we felt something different from what they call an “exhibition site”. Paint peeling off from the wall, partially ripped ‘Shoji’. The deteriorated interior stuck out in our mind. The design and layout of the house kept the ambience of Showa and it was as if time had stopped since it was built. Seeing this house as formative art, remnant of the time when it was built, the daily life of the people who used to live here, made us decide to keep it unchanged as much as possible. In addition, we wanted to revive it by restoring the dilapidated interior and decorating.

Whilst working on the production, we researched the history and natural environment of the house location. It brought us to the existence of valuable nature, and highlighted the not commonly known historical facts which were far from the impression we got from the house originally. Firstly, there was sea in front of the garden of the house a long time ago. As the sea levels rose, a period called the “Jomon transgression”, sea water engulfed the region that is now Saitama. Many shell mounds exist to prove it. Saitama is not facing the seacoast in the present day, so not many people know about its history. With an attempt to discover the existence of sea in the past, the work related to the sea in Saitama is shown on the 1st floor.

Secondly, by transition of the water area, there is the Minuma rice field in Saitama City. It is an important natural preserved area that plays a role as a reservoir to avoid the flooding of Arakawa and Tone River water system. Located within 30km from the metropolitan center, this is a rare large-scale green space where various living things inhabit. However, as the city development progresses, preserving the environment is becoming a larger issue. Since there are many endangered species inhabiting in this area, if the natural environment collapses, they could disappear. Through this research, we decided to show the work related to the Minuma rice field on the 2nd floor.

As this work was created based the research, we decided to set an archive room in the Western-style room on the 1st floor to show the documents, reference books we have collected, the materials and tools used for producing the work. To use the things left behind in this house as the material for the creation of the work, we had to study the material, i.e. test the strength, and try and develop the original method. The process of working by looking back on the time passed in this house was like excavation or repairing an old art piece. As a consideration for all the processes involved to revive the house as part of the work as a whole, we have put all the materials in the archive room.

It is our hope that the visitors of this exhibition will take a moment in everyday space of this small house, and give a thought to the journey of the grand natural environment of Saitama beyond time and space. We aimed to create a space where people can imagine the future.  This is an art project that by spending the time here, the visitors can become temporary residents and add a new page in the history of this silent deserted house.
